1-2 for Captain Al in top sprint

Klawervlei’s outstanding resident sire Captain Al has enjoyed another magnificent season in 2014-2015, and the son of Al Mufti was once again in the headlines during the past weekend.
The former Cape Guineas winner dominated proceedings in Saturday’s Gr1 Mercury Sprint where his offspring Captain Of All and Carry On Alice finished first and second to take their sire to the top of the SA sires premiership. The victorious Captain Of All made it back to back wins when storming home clear to win by four and a half lengths from his gallant, and multiple Gr1 winning, paternal half sister, with last season’s Horse Of The Year Legislate back in third place.
The Mercury proved a bonanza for Cape bred thoroughbreds with the first four home Captain Of All (Riverton Stud), Carry On Alice (Klawervlei Stud), Legislate (Cheveley Stud) and Fly By Night (Patricia Devine) all being bred in the Western Cape.

For the winner Captain Of All it was the perfect swansong to a career which has seen the handsome colt win seven of his 12 outings with his victories including three at Gr1 level. He heads to Klawervlei Stud, where he will join his sire, having earned over R2.2 million in stakes.

Captain Of All, who had previously lugged top weight to victory in the Gr1 Tsogo Sun Sprint, looks on track to be named Equus Champion Sprinter for the 2014-2015 season.

His sire Captain Al currently heads both the General Sires List and 2YO Sires List, and he looks well on track to record his seventh straight 2YO Sires Title –a truly phenomenal record.

His offspring include four individual Grade 1 winners this season, with his progeny having landed major Grade 1 features from 1200m (Captain Of All, Carry On Alice) to 2450 (Pine Princess). At the time of writing Captain Al sired runners have captured 18 individual pattern races this season, with major races won in 2014-2015 by the progeny of this remarkably consistent sire including the Gr1 H F Oppenheimer Horse Chestnut Stakes, Gr1 Wilgerbosdrift SA Oaks, Gr1 City Of Pietermaritzburg Sprint, Gr1Tsogo Sun Sprint and Gr1 Mercury Sprint.

Captain Al has 1 lot on offer at next month’s CTS August Two-Year-Old Sale- lot 66 is a filly out of the top class Bletchley Park mare Magic Filly, whose nine wins included the Gr2 Senor Santa Handicap.

The champion is also represented at the National Two Year Old Sale, where Captain Al’s three lots on offer include a three parts sister to champion Captain’s Lover (Lot 133), a half brother to Gr1 SA Derby hero Royal Bencher (Lot 209), and a half sister to the very talented Cracker Jack (Lot 269).
