18th juvenile winner of the season for Var

Avontuur’s top class stallion Var enjoyed a quickfire two-year-old double when his daughters Vargraves and Mara won their respective heats at Greyville on Wednesday afternoon.

Trained by Charles Laird, Vargraves justified 16-10 favouritism when romping home to a 1.75 length win over 1000m –beating another Var filly, Diamonds Forever, into second place in the process.

Bred by the Backworth Stud, Vargraves was a R475 000 purchase from the CTS Johannesburg Ready To Run Sale.

Mara became the second 2yo winner on the card for Var when running on nicely to salute by 1.25 lengths over 1400m. Bred by the Drakenstein Stud, Mara was making her debut on polytrack and clearly enjoyed the experience!

In the process, Var took his number of juvenile winners this season to 18, with his previous notable 2yo winners including G1 Tsogo Sun Gold Medallion runner up Varallo and G3 Cape Nursery runner up Speedpoint. The latter has been entered for the Listed Langerman later in the month and looks a well above average sort.

Also the sire of this season’s graded winners Exquisite Touch and Rivarine, not to mention recent Listed Olympic Duel Stakes winner Hanabi, Var is the covering sire on two mares at Friday’s Mares, Weanlings & Fillies For Stud Select Sale.
