Maine Chance Farms’ champion sire Silvano, who is well clear on the general sires list this season, enjoyed yet another big weekend, when proving popular in the auction ring and enjoying yet more big race success in KZN on Sunday.
A service to Silvano topped the annual Cape Breeders’ Club Stallion Service Auction when knocked down to Mayfair Speculators for R425 000.
The Silvano success story continued unabated on local tracks this weekend as well, when the champion son of Lomitas’ tally of a remarkable six winners was headed by a G3 Track And Ball Derby win by his son Mr Winsome, who dug down doggedly to land his first graded victory by half a length.
Mr Winsome, who started favourite for the R300 000 Derby, had previously dead-heated for third in the G2 Betting World 1900, and Sunday’s win was a second feature race win for the Dieu Farm bred gelding, who had previously landed the Listed Michael Roberts Handicap.
Now a six time winner, and earner of more than R690 000 in prize money, Mr Winsome (whose dam, Al Shama won four times and was third in the G2 Gold Circle Oaks) is bred on the hugely successful Silvano/Al Mufti cross –a mating which has previously produced the G1 winners Al Sahem, Bold Silvano and Kings Gambit.
Silvano was also responsible for Sunday’s G3 Track And Ball Oaks runner up Girl On The Run, who flew up late to finish within 1.75 lengths of the winner Zante. Girl On The Run, previously a winner of the G3 Yellowwood Handicap, has now won or placed in three graded races and she has earned more than R525 000 in stakes.
Another eye catching winner by Silvano this weekend was 2yo Well Connected, who ran on smartly to land a juvenile plate by 2.25 lengths over 1200m at Greyville on Friday night. The colt, who was bred by the Missing U Syndicate, is out of the winning National Assembly mare Over Bridget and is thus bred on the same cross as G1 winner Happy Valentine and Vercingetorix.
Well Connected is the fifth 2yo winner, from just 10 runners, this season for Silvano, having been preceded by the likes of debut winners Silver Coin and Silver Thursday.
The sire of 20 G1 winners (and counting), Silvano’s magnificent season in 2016-2017 has seen him represented by 12 black type winners who have won 17 black type races this season, including the G1 SA Derby, G1 Wilgerbosdrift SA Fillies Classic, G1 Klawervlei Majorca Stakes, G2 Independent on Saturday Drill Hall Stakes, and both the G2 Gauteng Guineas and G2 Daisy Guineas.
He has a single lot on the 2017 KZN Yearling Sale- a filly out of G3 Strelitzia Stakes winner She’s A Stunner (Lot 85).
