Finche, a Frankel half-brother to Mauritzfontein’s G1 winning sire Byword, impressed when making a winning debut on Poule d’Essai des Poulains (French 2000 Guineas) day at Deauville on Sunday.
Trained by Andre Fabre (who also conditioned Byword), Finche ran on powerfully to land the Prix du Dragon over 1600m by two lengths to stamp himself as a three-year-old to follow.
The regally bred colt holds an entry in the G1 Grand Prix de Paris and looks bound for bigger and better things.
He was produced by the Woodman mare Binche, who, Byword aside, is also responsible for millionaire and four time G1 winning filly Proviso.
Winner of the G1 Prince Of Wales’s Stakes, defeating no fewer than seven G1 winners, Byword won or placed in 10 of his 16 outings, with his other notable victories including a defeat of seven time G1 winner Cirrus Des Aigles in the G2 Prix Dollar.
Other notable horses defeated by Byword include US champion Stacelita, G1 Arlington Million hero Debussy, Dubai Duty Free winner Presvis, G1 Breeders’ Cup Mile runner up Courageous Cat, G1 Phoenix Stakes winner Zoffany and classic winner Wiener Walzer.
From the same male line as current sire sensations Pivotal (broodmare sire of Saturday’s French 1000 Guineas winner Precieuse), Siyouni and Star Witness, Byword’s dam Binche was Broodmare Of The Year in 2010.
This is the same family as G1 winners/champions Continent, Zambezi Sun, and Wandesta as well as multiple champion sire Court Martial.
