Saturday’s Sansui Summer Cup meeting proved a glorious one for thoroughbreds bred in the Cape.
They captured no fewer than five of the seven graded races carded, with the highlight being Master Sabina’s victory in the G1 Gauteng Sansui Summer Cup.
Remarkably, the first three home in the Summer Cup were all sired by stallions currently or previously active at stud in the Cape. Victorious Master Sabina being a son of Klipdrif’s late, great sire Jet Master while runner up Deo Juvente is by Drakenstein’s hot sire Trippi and third place finisher, French Navy is a gelding by Klawervlei’s highly successful sire Count Dubois.
Raised at Varsfontein Stud for owner-breeder Michael de Broglio, Master Sabina’s win in Saturday’s R2 million feature pushed his earnings to R2,399,475. It was the six-year-old gelding’s second graded win of his career with Master Sabina, runner up in the 2013 Summer Cup, having previously landed the G3 Campanajo 2200 back in 2014.
One of 22 Grade One winners for seven time champion sire Jet Master (and the sire’s second Summer Cup winner following Yorker in 2013), Master Sabina is the second winner for former G2 SA Oaks winner Sabina Park –a daughter of the former Daytona sire Sportworld.
Remarkably, Master Sabina is the second Summer Cup winner for Varsfontein in three years -followng Yorker (like Master Sabina trained by Geoff Woodruff). The farm’s ties to the 2015 Summer Cup are deep, as they not only raised Master Sabina, but also his dam Sabina Park and granddam Batimamselle.
Other Cape breds to triumph on the day were:
Brutal Force (bred by Lammerskraal Stud) –G2 Amtote Merchants
Negroamaro (bred by Wilgerbosdrift) –G3 Joshua Doore/Russells Fillies Mile
Noah From Goa (bred by Wilgerbosdrift) –G2 Investec Dingaans
Smart Call (bred by Mauritzfontein Stud) –G2
Saturday was also a triumphant for the late great Mauritzfontein sire Fort Wood. The latter is the sire of Negroamaro and broodmare sire of Noah From Goa, while his outstanding son Horse Chestnut is damsire of Smart Call.
