Cape bred thoroughbreds were once again to the fore at Saturday’s L’Ormarins Queen’s Plate day –one of the greatest horse racing events on the South African calendar.
Cape breds won three of the day’s main features, and nine of the races carded. Remarkably, the first four home in the G1 Maine Chance Farms Paddock Stakes (Smart Call, Inara, Bela-Bela, Same Jurisdiction) were all bred in the Cape, as were the first four home in the G1 L’Ormarins Queen’s Plate (Legal Eagle, Legislate, Noah From Goa, Captain America).
The day’s two big winners, Smart Call (bred by Mauritzfontein) and Legal Eagle (bred by Avontuur), both now automatically receive invites to the 2016 Breeders’ Cup meeting.
LQP day merely continued the great run of form that Cape bred thoroughbreds have enjoyed in 2015-2016 thus far.
To date, of the 38 graded races run during the current season, no fewer than 23 have been won by Cape bred thoroughbreds.
Not only have Cape bred horses won both the G1 L’Ormarins Queen’s Plate and G1 Maine Chance Farms Paddock Stakes, but they also won both the G1 World Sports Betting Cape Fillies Guineas (Silver Mountain) and G1 Grand Parade Cape Guineas (Noah From Goa).
