Cape breeders shine at Equus Awards

South Africa’s equine and human stars of the 2014-2015 racing season were honoured at the Equus Awards last night.
A good turnout attended the annual event, which was held at Emperors Palace in Johannesburg on Tuesday evening.

The two Breeders Awards on the evening both went to Cape Breeders, with Klawervlei being named South Africa’s Champion Breeders for the second year in a row. In turn, Highlands Farm was awarded with an Equus Award for Outstanding Breeder.

Two Cape stallions, Captain Al and Dynasty (who stand at Klawervlei and Highlands), enjoyed particular success on an evening which saw Cape bred thoroughbreds pick up of six of the racing awards on offer.

Captain Al, who was named Champion Sire for the 2014-2015, not only picked up an award himself but was also responsible for Captain Of All, who was named South Africa’s Champion Sprinter for the season just past. Captain Of All, a triple Grade One winner himself, will join his sire at Klawervlei this season.

Klawervlei sires had a tremendous evening, with three of the farm’s resident sires responsible for Equus Award winners. Count Dubois is sire of the Sandown Stud bred French Navy, who was named Champion 3YO Colt, while his stable mate Seventh Rock is responsible for Champion 2YO Colt Seventh Plain, winner of both the Gr1 Tsogo Sun Medallion and Gr1 Durban Golden Horseshoe.
Former Horse Of The Year Dynasty has enjoyed a sensational run of success at the Equus Awards –and, for the second year in a row, was once again responsible for the Horse Of The Year. This award went to the Guy Murdoch bred Futura, with the recent Gr1 Champions Cup winner also being named Champion Older Male and Champion Middle Distance.
Dynasty, who was duly awarded with the Outstanding Stallion Award, was also responsible for Legislate, who was named Champion Miler.

Remarkably, Dynasty has now been represented by three sons named Horse Of The Year – Irish Flame, Legislate and Futura-and this remarkable sire seems to go from strength to strength.
Cape breeders were also responsible for the Broodmare Of The Year – with the Craig Carey owned Si Senorita being named Champion Broodmare Of The Year. The stakes placed daughter of Cordoba is the dam of four stakes performers, with her top performer being last season’s Gr1 Grand Parade Cape Guineas winner Act Of War, himself an Equus nominee.
