Klawervlei’s well performed young sire Twice Over is a close relation of top class British 3yo Time Test, one of 12 horses set to contest Saturday’s G1 Breeders Cup Mile. Unfortunately, the colt has drawn out widest of all in the championship race and is set to jump from barrier 12 under jockey Ryan Moore.
The Roger Charlton trained Time Test, a son of Dubawi, has done precious little wrong in his brief career to date. A winner of four of seven outings to date, the colt was an impressive winner of the G2 Joel Stakes over 1600m last time out.
The colt is out of G1 Criterium De Saint-Cloud winner Passage Of Time, whose second dam Quandary is also second dam of European champion Twice Over –whose first crop sell in 2016.
Among Time Test’s rivals is last year’s winner Karakontie. Sadly that Bernstein colt, set to retire to Gainesway Farm at the end of the year, is also badly drawn and will jump from gate11. Interestingly, Karakontie is closely related to another Cape stallion in the form of Varsfontein Stud’s highly successful resident Judpot. Karakontie, a triple G1 winner whose victories also include the G1 Poule d’Essai Des Poulains (French 2000 Guineas), is out of Sun Is Up –whose second dam is the mighty mare and dual Breeders Cup winner Miesque. The latter is also the dam of Judpot and his hugely influential half brother Kingmambo.
Interestingly, yet another runner in the race, last out G1 Woodbine Mile hero Mondialiste, is a close relative of Mauritzfontein’s late, great champion sire Fort Wood (by Sadler’s Wells). Mondialiste, a son of Sadler’s Wells’ best son Galileo, is out of champion Occupandiste, whose third dam is the legendary broodmare Fall Aspen. The latter’s four G1 winners included Fort Wood, a former champion sire and broodmare sire in South Africa.
