Klawervlei Stud’s resident sire Captain Al was South Africa’s official champion sire for the newly completed 2014-2015 season.
The son of Al Mufti had a magnificent season, with his runners earning over R16 million and picking up 18 black type wins.
It was a first general sires title for Captain Al, long regarded as one of South Africa’s most reliable and consistent source of stakes winners.
The ever reliable Captain Al, whose offspring include more than 30 G1 performers, was represented by four individual Gr1 winners during the past season, with all of Captain America, Captain Of All, Carry On Alice and Pine Princess capturing Gr1 races.
Remarkably, Captain Al was represented by Grade One winners from 1200m to 2450m this past season, with his top performers including champion sprinter elect Captain Of All and Gr1 Wilgerbosdrift SA Oaks winner Pine Princess.
Captain Al, also broodmare sire of Gr1 Jonsson Workwear Garden Province winner Same Jurisdiction) also joined an elite group of stallions when he headed the 2YO Sires List as well. It was a seventh consecutive 2YO Sires title for Captain Al, whose juvenile runners last season included no fewer than five stakes winners, including Gr3 Cape Of Good Hope Nursery winner Captain Chaos.
His son and triple Gr1 winner Captain Of All, who was bred by the Riverton Stud, is set to join Captain Al at Klawervlei in 2015.
Cape stallions fared well in the 2014-2015 list, with the top five (Captain Al, Dynasty, Silvano, Trippi and Jet Master) on the general sires list having either stood or currently standing at stud in the Western Cape.
The newly crowned champion sire, whose son Barbosa landed the Listed Umgeni Handicap on Saturday, has one lot on offer at Saturday’s CTS August 2YO Sale- a filly out of nine time G2 winner Magic Filly.
Captain Al also has 3 lots on offer at next week’s National 2YO Sale, with his draft including a three parts sister to champion Captain’s Lover (Lot 133), and a half brother to Gr1 SA Derby hero Royal Bencher (lot 209).
Captain Al’s triumph was made all the more sweet for Klawervlei as they headed the breeders list for a second year in a row.
