Klawervlei’s former champion sire Captain Al, who was represented by no fewer than five individual G1 winners in 2016, was the top sire by aggregate at this weekend’s Cape Premier Yearling Sale.
The son of Al Mufti had 18 lots fetch R28. 475 million at the two day sale, with Captain Al’s yearlings averaging an impressive R1 581 944.
The eight times champion sire of 2yos’ top lots sold were a pair of blue blooded colts which fetched R4.5 million apiece.
First of the Captain Al sired yearlings to make this price was lot 41, a colt out of former G1 Cape Fillies Guineas winner Ebony Flyer –herself a half sister to Captain Al’s G1 Cape Fillies Guineas winning champion Captain’s Lover (the latter herself had a Var daughter fetch R3.6 million on the first day of the Premier Sale.)
This blue blooded colt was knocked down to the bid of Bernard Marais.
David Redvers purchased the other R4.5 million Captain Al colt, who was produced by Oratorio’s dual G3 winning daughter Orator’s Daughter. The colt is the first foal of the mare, whose five wins included the G3 Acacia Handicap and G3 Jacaranda Handicap. Catalogued as lot 142, the son of Captain Al is from the same family as Hong Kong G1 winner Sight Winner.
Captain Al had no fewer than eight lots fetch upwards of R1 000 000, with his top filly, a daughter of Galileo mare Zippy Zitter, being knocked down to Lindsay Ralphs for R3 000 000.
Captain Al also played an important role as broodmare sale at the 2017 Cape Premier Yearling Sale, with his daughters producing three lots to fetch R1 000 000 plus.
