Cheveley Stud bred colt shines at Equus Awards

2014 EQUUS AWARDS – HORSE OF THE YEAR “LEGISLATE”

The Cheveley Stud bred Legislate was named South Africa’s Horse of the Year at the recent Equus Awards.
The ceremony, held in Johannesburg on Wednesday evening, honoured all the stars, equine and human, of the 2013-2014 racing season and proved another triumph for Cape bred thoroughbreds.

Legislate, a R100 000 buy at the 2012 Emperors Palace National Yearling Sale, was also named Champion 3YO Colt and Champion Middle Distance Horse. The colt had earlier cleaned up at the RA Cape Racing and Breeding Awards ceremony, where Legislate picked up a combined total of six awards.

2014 EQUUS AWARDS – OUTSTANDING STALLION “DYNASTY”

A son of Highlands Farm’s resident sire Dynasty, Legislate had a superb season in 2013-2014. He won four races on the trot, with his winning sequence including scores in the Gr1 Investec Cape Derby, Gr2 KRA Guineas, Gr1 Daily News 2000 and Gr1 Vodacom Durban July.

Owned by Newbury Racing in partnership with Jack Mitchell and Drakenstein Stud, Legislate, who is out of the Restructure mare Champers, has earned over R4.5 million in prize money, and is yet another superb tribute to the quality of thoroughbred in the Cape.

Legislate’s sire Dynasty, himself another Cape bred champion, also enjoyed wonderful success at the Equus Awards ceremony.
The former Horse Of The Year won the Outstanding Stallion Award, while his now retired daughter Beach Beauty picked up her second consecutive title as Equus Champion Older Filly/Mare.

The Varsfontein Stud based Star Of Arcole was named Equus Broodmare Of The Year. Her daughter Ash Cloud won the Gr1 SA Oaks –

giving her dam her third Oaks winner. Star Of Arcole had previously been represented by Princess Of Light (Gold Circle Oaks) and Arcola (SA Oaks).

Remarkably, Cape bred and based thoroughbreds and breeders picked up no fewer than 14 Equus awards!
