Giovanni Canaletto, a half brother to Drakenstein Stud’s exciting young sire Duke Of Marmalade, appears a horse to be going places.
The 3yo son of Galileo, and full brother to 2013 G1 Investec Derby winner Ruler Of The World, has been given entries in three major European classics this year. Giovanni Canaletto is entered in all of the G1 Tattersalls Irish 2000 Guineas, G1 Investec Derby (for which he is a 20-1 shot) and G1 Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby.
The lightly raced colt had just two starts last year, finishing a fair third on debut before hacking up six and a half lengths over 1600m at Leopardstown on his final juvenile outing.
In an interview with At The Races, trainer Aidan O’Brien described his progressive sophomore as “He’s in good shape. He was very green in both his starts last year, fast asleep both days. To be fair, it’s a sleepy pedigree, they are all very lazy. He’s a bigger, rangier horse than his half-brother Duke Of Marmalade and his full-brother Ruler Of The World and he put on a lot of weight over the winter. He’ll gallop at the Curragh on Sunday and he’ll go down the Derby trial route.”
Giovanni’s Canaletto’s half brother, and former Cartier Champion Older Male, Duke Of Marmalade completed a successful first season at Drakenstein Stud in 2014, where he covered an exceptional book of mares.
The Duke’s first mates included none other than multiple champion racemare Beach Beauty, whose 17 wins netted connections in excess of R5 million.
Duke Of Marmalade’s popularity was understandably, as this superbly bred son of Danehill also ended 2014 as the Leading Third Crop Sire in Europe.
