Varsfontein Stud’s exciting sire Gimmethegreenlight looks to have serious classic prospect on his hands in the form of Surcharge.
The latter, who was bred by Varsfontein Stud, made it four wins from just six outings when winning Saturday’s Listed Supabets Secretariat Stakes at Turffontein for trainer Stuart Pettigrew and jockey Gavin Lerena.
He is likely to be campaigned towards a start in both the G2 Gauteng Guineas and G1 SA Classic.
Surcharge, a R200 000 buy from the 2016 National Yearling Sale, is out of the Diktat mare Congestion Charge.
Gimmethegreenlight, who shares his exceptional sire More Than Ready with Saturday’s brilliant G2 Remsen Stakes winner Catholic Boy, is also sire of last season’s G2 SA Fillies Nursery winner Green Plains, who is a runner in Saturday’s G2 SW Security Solutions Southern Cross Stakes at Kenilworth.
To date, the former L’Ormarins Queen’s Plate winner has been represented by six stakes winners in his first crop and five in his second crop (now three).
Other notable 3yos representing Gimmethegreenlight this season include East Cape champion Queen Forever, and G2 Western Cape Fillies Championship third Rose In Bloom.
He also has an extremely well bred crop of 2yos in the wings, which suggest Gimmethegreenlight could be on track for another big season in 2017-2018.
With mares such as Equus Champion Bela-Bela and Trippi’s G1 winning sprinter Real Princess in foal to him this season, there should be plenty more to come from this exceptional young stallion.
