Drakenstein Stud’s highly successful sire Philanthropist looks to have a number of smart two-year-olds on his hands this season. He had yet another eye catching juvenile winner this weekend when
the well related Mike made a smart winning debut when scoring by a neck at Woodbine on Sunday.
Original second place finisher Second Concoction was relegated to third and Philly Completely was put up to second –giving Philanthropist a 1-2 finish in the maiden plate over 1400m.
Out of the Hail The Pirates mare Uproar, Mike became the most expensive yearling sold in Canada in 20 years when he was knocked down for $325 000 at last year’s CTHS Select Yearling Sale. Judging by this smart first up win, Mike looks to have been a good buy at the price!
Mike is a full brother to the Philanthropist sired champion Pender Harbour, who ran third in Sunday’s G3 Valedictory Stakes.
A dual classic winner and former Champion 3YO, the now retired Pender Harbour won or placed in no fewer than 30 races and earned over $1.8 million in prize money. The popular and charismatic gelding won no fewer than 10 stakes races, with Pender Harbour’s greatest wins including scores in the Canadian classics the Prince Of Wales Stakes and the Breeders Stakes. Remarkably, Pender Harbour competed successfully in stakes races from two to seven!
Philanthropist has enjoyed yet another superb season with his runners overseas. The blue blooded son of Kris S is currently North America’s second leading sire on Synthetics, with his runners having earned more than $2.1 million in purses this year. He is currently above such world leading sires as Ghostzapper, Candy Ride, Smart Strike, Giant’s Causeway and Scat Daddy –no mean company!
Philanthropist, whose numerous high class relatives include former leading South African sire National Assembly, has some exceptionally well related first crop two-year-olds representing him in this country in 2015-2016. Among them are siblings to such notable performers as Captain Scott, Demanding Lady, Doing It For Dan, Exhilaration, Franny and Sweet Sanette.
