Drakenstein Stud’s outstanding young sire Duke Of Marmalade was represented by his third major European classic winner in 2015 when his son Nutan won the Group 1 Deutsches Derby (German Derby) on Sunday.
Nutan raced off the early pace set by Koffi Prince in the 2400m Hamburg classic before jockey Andrasch Starke drove him into the lead at the top of the straight.
From there, the 2015 Deutsches Derby was turned into a procession, with the Duke Of Marmalade colt pulling clear for a five length success.
The 21st stakes winner for his sensational sire, Nutan has now won or placed in all four of his starts and has now amassed earnings of over 400 000 euros.
Duke Of Marmalade’s previous classic winners this year include brilliant Group 1 French Oaks winner Star Of Seville (who is likely to run next in the Group 1 Nassau Stakes at Goodwood) and Italian Guineas winner Sound Of Freedom.
Danehill’s Cartier Champion son and five time Group 1 winner is currently fifth on the leading sires in Europe List, with Duke Of Marmalade’s runners placing their champion sire above such outstanding stallions as Danehill Dancer, Fastnet Rock, High Chaarral, and Sea The Stars.a
