Double for Argonaut
Cheveley Stud’s young sire Argonaut was represented by a pair of smart winners over the past weekend in the form of the Cape bred pair of Seven Sails and Theseus.
First Argonaut to score was Seven Sails, who made a stunning winning debut at Turffontein on Saturday.
Bred by the Digteby Stud, Seven Sails was sent off a 22-10 favourite to win first time out over 1000m. The 3yo filly duly obliged, scoring an impressive three and a quarter length victory over fellow first timer Winter Approval and Maliko Bay (like the winner a 3yo Argonaut filly bred by Digteby Stud).
From the family of Equus Champion Stayer Hot Ticket, Seven Sails looks to have bags of speed, and looks a filly with a bright future.
Second Argonaut sired winner of the weekend came in the form of the Michael Roberts trained Theseus, successful at Scottsville on Sunday.
Bred by Riverton Stud, Theseus followed up a smart debut effort, when second behind Scudetto, with a comfortable one length win over 1200m. His trainer rates Theseus highly, and he looks a smart sort in the making.
Out of the Parade Leader mare Fiesta Queen, Theseus was a R130 000 buy at the 2013 Emperors Palace National Yearling Sale.
South Africa’s Equus Champion 2YO Colt of 2007, Argonaut is a son of champion sire Western Winter and the outstanding broodmare Aquasarto.
He stands for a 2014 fee of R8 000.
