Double for Lateral
Maine Chance Farms’ first season Lateral had a smart double at Turffontein this past Saturday. His offspring dominated the first two races on the card, with the stallion’s son Illuminati winning the first race in a canter, and Lateral filly Lemon Tea winning the second race.
The Maine Chance Farms bred Illuminati, a R50 000 bargain buy at the 2013 Emperors Palace National 2YO Sale, scored an impressive win over 1400m streaking clearly to register a comfortable and convicing 3.75 length win for trainer Weiho Marwing.
Out of the Fasliyev mare Inspired, Illuminati looks well above average, and this colt should not stop here.
Weiho Marwing clearly likes Lateral’s progeny, as he is also the trainer of Lemon Tea. Bred by Dr Ian Heynes, Lemon Tea was produced by the Parade Leader mare Lemon Drop Girl – an unplaced half-sister to the high-class stakes horses Cigar Boy, Naughty Prince and Heat Of The Night.
Lateral’s first crop now includes three winners, and three placed horses, from just a handful of runners.
He is now South Africa’s leading first crop sire by winners and no doubt has plenty more to come.
A champion son of world leading sire Singspiel, Lateral is well represented on the 2014 Emperors Palace National Yearling Sale.
His four lots on offer include a beautifully bred half-brother to former Gr1 Champions Cup winner James Jaguar (lot 151) and a colt from the family of champions Bahri, Ajina and the magnificent Quality Road (lot 518).
