Drakenstein Stud’s 2017 National Sale draft

Drakenstein Stud, home to South Africa’s reigning champion sire Trippi, will be offering a top class draft of 17 (and four lots as agent) yearlings at next week’s National Yearling Sale, which takes place at the TBA complex in Germiston on May 3rd-5th.

First of the Drakenstein Stud draft to come through the sales ring is lot 24, a filly by Philanthropist (whose 2yo Pack Leader made an impressive winning debut recently), out of Jet Master’s G1 Empress Club Stakes winning daughter Little Miss Magic. This is the family of star fillies Bilateral, State Treasure and champion Tara’s Touch –to name a few!

Second of the draft on offer is lot 70, a colt by the farm’s Cartier Champion and classic sire, Duke Of Marmalade. This colt, whose dam is a G3 winning half-sister to triple G1 winner Smart Banker, is a half-brother to 5 winners including G2 Colorado King Stakes winner Halve The Deficit. Another half-brother Silver Coin, a former R6 000 000 buy, recently made a winning debut and he holds an entry in the Listed Somerset 1200 due to be run at Kenilworth soon. This is a truly great family responsible for, among others, the champions Minding and Vaguely Noble.

Five time G1 winner Duke Of Marmalade is also the sire of lot 151, a colt out of multiple G2 winner Sangria Girl. This colt is closely inbred to the great broodmare Lassie Dear.

Jet Master’s G2 winning son Master Of My Fate (whose relatives include Breeders’ Cup winner Pluck) is responsible for lot 152 –a bay half-brother to the stakes placed winner of four San Trip. This colt is out of a classic placed daughter of Fort Wood, and he is bred on a similar cross to multiple G1 winner Thunder Dance.

Danehill’s champion son Duke Of Marmalade is responsible for 157, a bay colt out of Var’s G1 daughter Schiffer. Herself a lightning fast stakes winner, Schiffer is a full sister to G2 2yo and Dubai winner Mastermind, and this colt’s second dam is a half-sister to graded winners Mentor and Royal IQ.

Champion sire Silvano, sire of recent G1 winners Orchid Island and Nightingale, is the sire of lot 177, a chestnut colt by the name of Arrows Of Desire. Bred on a similar cross to champions Bold Silvano and Kings Gambit, this colt is out of a G3 placed half-sister to the dam of Triple Crown winning sire Louis The King and he is a direct descendant of Pretty Polly.

Var, the sire of champions Variety Club, Val De Ra and Via Africa, is the sire of lot 224 –a bay colt out of Captain Al’s G1 Cape Fillies Guineas runner up Tick Tock –a sister to stakes winning 2yo Red Disa. His second dam is by Elliodor –broodmare sire of Var’s champion Val De Ra.

Mambo In Seattle, the sire of dual G1 winner Same Jurisdiction, is responsible for lot 231 –a colt whose stakes placed dam (by champion sire and top class broodmare sire Trippi) is an own sister to Derby winner and Dubai scorer Liquid Mercury. The family of European champions Mark Of Esteem and Mashaallah among others.

Promising sire Philanthropist (whose first local crop includes 6 stakes horses) is the sire of lot 259, a bay colt with a stallion’s pedigree. Out of a stakes placed daughter of champion sire Western Winter, he is from the immediate family as world leading sires Invincible Spirit and Kodiac, as well as dual G1 winning 2yo and Coolmore sire Pride Of Dubai.

Chouette is the name of lot 312, a filly by Duke Of Marmalade out of a winning daughter of Trippi. This regally bred filly’s second dam is a four time winning own sister to exported G1 SA Guineas winner Heir Apparent and G3 winner Quickwood, with the latter being responsible for this season’s G1 winning filly Nightingale.

Another by five time G1 winner Duke Of Marmalade, who is a half-brother to an Investec Derby winner, is lot 231-a bay half-brother to 6 winners including 2 stakes horses (one of whom produced G3 performer Impala Lily). This colt, bred on the same cross as classic winner and champion Simple Verse, is out of a half-sister to French Oaks winner Bright Sky –whose daughter Bengala won on debut and finished third in a feature next time out. King Of The Sky is a son of champion sire Silvano and the stakes placed mare East Breaks –a half-sister to the dam of Trippi sired US G1 winner R Heat Lightning. This colt, who sports a true stallion’s pedigree, is from the family of international G1 winners Poet’s Voice, Versailles Treaty and Dance To Bristol as well as dual US champion Exclusive Native.

Horse Of The Year and outstanding international sire Rock Of Gibraltar (whose local runners include the G1 winners Seventh Rock, Europa Point and Alboran Sea), is responsible for lot 396 –a chestnut colt whose dam is a half-sister to British G3 winner Green Destiny.
