Drakenstein Stud’s magnificent stallion Duke Of Marmalade is now officially the sire of four European classic winners this year.
His brave daughter Simple Verse was re-instated as the winner of the 2015 G1 Ladbrokes St Leger, following Wednesday’s appeal.
Simple Verse had finished first past the post in the St Leger a few weeks ago but was controversially disqualified and placed second. Trainer Ralph Beckett immediately intimated he would appeal the decision, which subsequently saw the original result re-instated and Simple Verse’s first past the post finish has now become official.
The honest bay filly is the first female to win the classic St Leger since 1992 when champion User Friendly prevailed.
Simple Verse, who had previously won the G3 Markel Insurance Fillies Stakes at Glorious Goodwood, has now won four of her last five outings and four of seven outings overall.
Her sire’s other previous classic winners this year include Sound Of Freedom (Italian 1000 Guineas), Star Of Seville (French Oaks) and Nutan (German Derby).
Another Duke Of Marmalade son, Big Orange, is on target for a potential start in the 2015 G1 Emirates Melbourne Cup. Could he provide his Cartier Champion sire with yet another big race win?
