The coming weekend could be a profitable one for Drakenstein Stud’s resident stallion Duke Of Marmalade.
The latter’s relatives could well come to the fore in both the G1 Investec Oaks and G1 Investec Derby this Friday and Saturday respectively.
Duke Of Marmalade’s daughter Star Of Seville, a winner of three of her four outings to date, currently ranks as a leading favourite for the Oaks, which is due to be run at Epsom at 17:05 (SAF time).
Trained by John Gosden, Star Of Seville’s three victories to date include a last out win in the G3 Tattersalls Musidora Stakes, which saw her account for G1 Fillies Mile winner Together, herself a leading Oaks contender.
Star Of Seville, however, is not her sire’s sole connection to this weekend’s Epsom classics.
Duke Of Marmalade’s high class half brother Giovanni Canaletto (who has been backed into 7-1 for Saturday’s classic) is a likely runner in the G1 Investec Derby this Saturday.
A full brother to former Investec Derby winner Ruler Of The World (by Galileo), Giovanni Canaletto has won or placed in all three outings and last time out finished second in the G3 Airlie Stud Gallinule Stakes at the Curragh. Clearly held in high regard by Ballydoyle, the colt also holds entries in the G1 Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby and the G1 Coral Eclipse Stakes.
Duke Of Marmalade is also the sire of one of Europe’s top three year olds this year in the form of Sound Of Freedom.
The latter, herself a classic winning filly, has won four of her five outings and put up a brave effort last time out when second, against colts, in the G2 Derby Italiano.
