Duke’s first local foals continue to impress

Drakenstein Stud’s red hot sire Duke Of Marmalade continues to make a favourable impression with his first South African crop of foals.

The five time Group 1 winning son of Danehill covered an exceptional first book of mares in 2014, and first appearances suggest the support was well justified.
Among the mares to foal down to Duke Of Marmalade this season was the top class sprinter Reflective Image, who produced a cracking filly. Reflective Image, a daughter of Tamburlaine, was among the best sprinting fillies of her generation and earned over R600 000. Her career highlight came in the 2014 G2 Sceptre Stakes, where the late flying mare downed a cracking field to win going away. Among the beaten fillies in the Sceptre were graded winners Jet Belle, Franny, Welwitschia and Valdivia.

Also at Golden Touch Thoroughbred Services is the beautifully bred mare Rose Garden – a Spectrum half sister to former Equus Champion 2YO and new Wilgerbosdrift sire Soft Falling Rain. Spectrum was back in international headlines yesterday as the broodmare sire of German Group 3 winner Dessertoflife. Rose Garden, who hails from a wonderfully successful North American family, produced this lovely filly, who is bred on very similar lines to the globe trotting star Soft Falling Rain himself.

Another top class mare to foal to the Duke in 2015 was Valdivia, who gave birth to this striking looking colt at Ridgemont Stud.

A daughter of leading Var, Valdivia won her first three races on the bounce including the Gr3 Strelitzia Stakes and this colt is her first foal.

With these just a few of the top class mares to foal down to leading European sire Duke Of Marmalade it would appear the best is yet to come for this champion!
