Exceptional foals from Lammerskraal
Lammerskraal Stud, the former home of the late, great stallion Western Winter, is also the residence of some outstanding foals born in 2014.
The foals pictured are blue blooded on either sides of their pedigree, having been sired by some of South Africa’s best and most exciting stallions and out of the farm’s very best broodmares.
Few are better bred than this attractive filly out of the outstanding broodmare Akinfeet. This lovely filly, who is from the first crop of multiple Equus Champion What A Winter, is a three parts sister to last season’s Gr1 L’Ormarins Queen’s Plate hero Capetown Noir. The latter, like What A Winter, is a son of triple Champion Sire Western Winter. Equus Broodmare Of The Year in 2013 Akinfeet, who herself ran third in the UAE 1000 Guineas, is also the dam of former Gr3 August Stakes winner Across The Ice – who has earned over R1.3 million in stakes, and the stakes placed filly Maxixe.
Full Card, like Akinfeet, is out of former Cape Fillies Guineas winner Dance Every Dance (by Northern Guest). She was a smart racemare, who won four times, and has already proven successful at stud – with her 4 winners including the Listed winner Grandalea, and the talented Full Combat, who was sent to Dubai.
She has a colt by Lammerskraal’s resident sire, and Grade 1 winning millionaire, Go Deputy – a full brother to Full Combat himself.
Another beautifully bred daughter of champion What A Winter (one of Western Winter’s greatest sons), is this filly out of Mina Salaam. A daughter of world leading sire Medaglia D’Oro (also sire of US Horse Of The Year Rachel Alexandra), Mina Salaam is out of champion racemare Circle Of Life- a half sister to 2 Grade 1 winners, including J&B Met hero Zebra Crossing. A high-class stakes winner of seven races, Mina Salaam’s filly foal has a truly exceptional pedigree, and one can only wonder what her paddock value could reach.
The beautifully bred, and well performed Aquila Rapax, has a lovely filly on the ground. This pretty filly is a daughter of More Than Ready’s Grade 1 L’Ormarins Queen’s Plate winner Gimmethegreenlight. Aquila Rapax, a full sister to multiple Grade 1 winner Set Afire and very closely related to the top class runners Red Ray and Nania, was a high class juvenile, who won her first two starts including the Listed Ruffian Stakes.
A mare very closely related to Aquila Rapax is Vermilion. A classy racemare herself, Vermilion won or placed in eight of her 11 outings, and ran a good second in the Gr3 Prix Du Cap –when beaten by her full sister Nania! A full sister to Red Ray and Brutal Force, Vermilion is by Western Winter out of one of Lammerskraal’s finest mares – Nacarat.
She has a filly by the beautifully bred Gimmethegreenlight – whose sire More Than Ready is also the
sire of Australian sensation Sebring, who is one of the hottest stallions standing in Australia at the moment.
One superbly bred colt which was foaled at Lammerskraal this season is this foal out of the stakes winning Badger Land mare
Bardot. A son of What A Winter (himself a magnificently bred champion), this bay is a half brother to Gr1 Woolavington 2000 winner Viva Maria as well as the impressive recent debut winner Bichett.
Viva Maria is herself represented by her first foal this year – a lovely colt by Kingmambo’s half brother, Judpot.
