Drakenstein Stud’s red hot resident sire Trippi, who ended 2014-2015 as South Africa’s Leading Sire of 3YOS, had a smart looking debut winner to his credit on Wednesday.
The Alistair Gordon trained Monte Christo, showed plenty of determination to get up to win a maiden plate over 1200m at Scottsville.
The 3yo colt, who was a R300 000 purchase from last year’s National Sale, was backed down to 11-2 and duly delivered first time out when winning by half a length over the more experienced Unbelievable Chad. It was a 1-3 finish for Trippi first timers, with another promising son of the sire Ferrie running a smart race back in third position.
Monte Christo is just one of a number of promising sophomores representing Trippi in 2015-2016, with the others including the feature race winning fillies Jane S Piddy and Speedy Suzy.
He also has an exceptional crop of 4yos this season, headed up by top sprinter Trip To Heaven, G1 Golden Horseshoe hero Afrikaburn, and millionaire Zambezi River. This crop also included G3 Winter Derby hero Liquid Mercury, who will be plying his trade in Dubai next year.
Trippi is also the sire of the outstanding filly Inara, the only 3yo ever to win both the Paddock Stakes/Majorca Stakes in the same year.
Understandably, Trippi’s ongoing run of success ensured his popularity in the sales ring this year. Yearlings by him fetched up to R2.5 million this year, with his top lot being a half sister to Cold As Ice who was knocked down to Wehann Smith at the 2015 Cape Premier Yearling Sale.
