Favour Stud’s Quest for Excellence

Favour Stud has decided to consolidate and focus on the breeding of excellent pedigree mares to outstanding excellent stallions. With this in mind Favour Stud’s owners Ernst and Engelize du Preez of Favour Stud would like to introduce Tobie Spies as our new Stud Manager.

Tobie Spies

Tobie  Spies is no stranger to the workings of the breeding of Racehorses or the industry as a whole as his impeccable Biography speaks for itself.

For Tobie Spies horses have always been a part of his life and total passion from birth.  Tobie’s father was an avid participant in the “bush racing” around the Middelburg area and Tobie won his first race as the jockey at the age of 7, this laid the foundation for him to pursue his dream of involvement in the sport of kings.

This dream was realized in 1977 when he was working as the youngest senior official ever on the Anglo American coal mines and was able to keep a couple of broodmares close by. When the foals reached racing age it was a natural progression for him  to venture into training and he was granted his colours and Owner-Trainer’s License in 1979.

Tobie started as stud manager at Trevor & Minou Armitage’s Standerton stud farm in 1983 after resigning his position at the coal mines. Whilst managing one of the larger studs in SA, he also found time to train many a winner for the famous all red colours of the Armitage’s on the track he made through the mielie fields.

In 1985 it was time to join the big league and an illustrious career followed. With Tobie now based at the Vaal Race Course, he will probably be best remembered for back to back wins of the Topsport Bloodline Million, which was then the richest race in South Africa, with Fast Gun & Mysterious Hal. Other memorable achievements include the Queen’s Plate winner Yard Master and numerous top stayers such as Aced and Northern Flame.

Harry Hall

When the millennium dawned, Tobie took a back seat and supported his son Corne’s racing yard as a very knowledgeable assistant. During this time Tobie also found time to do yearling selections for the TBA along with the well respected John Kramer. This partnership of sales selectors was legendary and breeders still marvel at Tobies professional and non-partial approach.

Recently Tobie has helped to train Favour Stud bred winners such as Sarve an eight time winner and now a broodmare in the Favour Stud stables, All the Bids – winner of the R100 000 Northern Cape Stayers Handicap, Tobes Lass, Anger, Harry Hall, Lord Jonathan, to name but a few.

With Tobie Spies’s background in the game of racing, his experience as stud manager and familiarity with the racing & breeding fraternities, it is a great pleasure to welcome him as Favour Stud’s new stud manager.
