Maine Chance Farms’ sire Silvano had a weekend to remember when he enjoyed a feature race double, courtesy of his daughter Orchid Island and son Mr Winsome.
The Wilgerbosdrift owned Orchid Island stamped herself as a filly to follow when romping some promising male rivals to land the Listed Sea Cottage Stakes at Turffontein on Saturday.
The regally bred filly, now a winner of two of just four outings, put four lengths between herself and Fastnet Rock son Furiosa to land the R150 000 by four lengths.
Bred to be anything, Orchid Island looks a filly with real classic potential. She is certainly bred to be good-not only is she a daughter of a former champion sire in Silvano, but her Listed Oaks Trial winning dam Ilha Grande (dam of the 2016 National Yearling Sales topper) is a daughter of former Horse Of The Year and multiple G1 winner Ilha Da Vitoria. The latter, sadly now deceased, was a daughter of Candy Stripes –also broodmare sire of Silvano’s R2,3 million plus earner, Punta Arenas.
Silvano’s second stakes winner on the weekend just past came in the form of the Dieu Farm bred Mr Winsome.
The latter picked up the first black type win of his career, when scoring a half length triumph in the Listed Michael Roberts Handicap at Scottsville on Sunday.
The four-year-old, who has now won four times up to 2000m, has now banked over R370 000.
Mr Winsome, who is out of the stakes placed Al Mufti mare Al Shama, is bred on the same Silvano/Al Mufti cross as champions Kings Gambit and Bold Silvano, as well as the top class G2 Gold Bracelet winner Gallica Rose and hugely promising filly Epona.
Silvano is enjoying another memorable season in 2016-2017, with his other notable winners including the graded winners Girl On The Run and Nebula. His current crop of 3yos include seven stakes horses including impressive recent Listed Ardmore Jamaica Handicap winner Epona.
