Drakenstein Stud’s resident sire Trippi has enjoyed a sensational run of form in 2014-2015.
Trippi has been represented by runners in the majority of South Africa’s feature races in which his runners have fared extremely well.
The son of End Sweep’s success continued this weekend when he was represented by his 56th and 57th stakes winners respectively, when Lanner Falcon and Liquid Mercury won the Listed Ladies Mile and Gr3 Winter Derby at Kenilworth on Saturday.
Lanner Falcon, who is bred and owned by Drakenstein Stud, was certainly overdue her first feature race win. Runner up in the 2013 Gr1 Avontuur Estate Cape Fillies Guineas, Lanner Falcon had previously been placed in six Graded/Listed races.
Backed into start a 17-10 favourite for the 1600m contest, Lanner Falcon producing a devastating late run to mow down her rivals and win going away by an emphatic one and a half lengths and claim her first black type win in the process.
Her paternal half brother Liquid Mercury, like Lanner Falcon also bred by Drakenstein, was another landing a first feature race victory. The grey Trippi gelding showed plenty of courage and resolution in fighting back gamely to win the Gr3 Winter Derby, the final leg of the Winter Series, on Saturday. Liquid Mercury, also third in this season’s Gr1 Investec Cape Derby, had previously been placed in the first two legs of the Winter Series and was a most worthy winner of the R250 000 Winter Derby.
The consistent 3yo has now won or placed in 10 of 11 outings and has won over R460 000 in stakes.
To date, Trippi has been represented by 13 black type winners in South Africa this season, with his tally of feature race winners including dual Gr1 winner Inara.
The latter (set to run in the Gr1 Jonsson Workwear Garden Province Stakes) is one of 11 Trippi sired runners set to compete at Greyville on Vodacom Durban July day this coming Saturday.
Other July day hopefuls for Trippi including leading Garden Province hopeful Hammie’s Hooker, Grade 1 contenders Escape Route and Hip Hop Dancer, and Speedy Suzy. The latter, winner of the Gr3 Pretty Polly Stakes earlier this season, is a runner in the day’s final event –the KZN Yearling Sale Million.
