First G1 winner for Twice Over

Klawervlei Stud’s well performed young sire Twice Over has made a cracking start to his stud career and he was represented by a first crop Grade One winner when his son Sand And Sea landed the G1 Tsogo Sun Gold Medallion at Scottsville on Saturday.

Sand And Sea

Bred by the Drakenstein Stud, and a R1 000 000 buy from last year’s Cape Premier Yearling Sale, Sand And Sea provided trainer Dennis Drier with a remarkable seventh win in the Gold Medallion by accounting for some of South Africa’s most promising two-year-olds in emphatic fashion in Saturday’s R750 000 contest.

Given a typically confident ride by Anton Marcus, Sand And Sea romped home to land a Grade One contest at just the second time of asking by two and a quarter lengths.

Sand And Sea, now unbeaten in two outings and a likely nominee for the title of Equus Champion 2YO Colt, races for owners Bernard Kantor, Jack Mitchell, Marsh Shirtliff and Mayfair Speculators.

His sire, European champion and four time G1 winner Twice Over, is the first of this season’s first crop stallions to be represented by a G1 winner.

(Twice Over’s close relative Silent Echo added more gloss to his family when making it two wins from just three outings when successful over 1400m at Haydock on Saturday).

Twice Over, whose 12 wins included two runnings of the G1 Champion Stakes, has once again popular in the sales ring this year, with his offspring fetching up to R2.1 million and buyers have more opportunities to acquire stock of this exciting young sire in the next few weeks.

Rhe champion is the covering sire on five lots at the upcoming Mares, Weanlings & Fillies For Stud Select Sale, and also has a weanling colt on that sale from the famed E family (Lot111).

Twice Over, whose relatives include current high class US 3yos American Anthem and Patch as well as  G1 winners All At Sea, Banshee Breeze, Mutual Trust, and Passage Of Time, has 16 lots on next month’s Klawervlei Farm Sale, including a colt out of a daughter of an Oaks runner up (Lot 8), a half-sister to champion Liquid Motion (Lot 17), a colt (bred on a similar cross to Sand And Sea) out of a stakes placed winner of four (Lot 18), a filly out of a stakes placed daughter of Captain Al from the family of champions El Gran Senor and Try My Best (Lot 25) and a filly out of a stakes placed Commands mare from the family of English Derby winner and leading sire Shirley Heights (Lot 56).
