Fort Wood mares come to the fore
This weekend, South Africa’s feature races were completely dominated by offspring of Fort Wood mares.
The Wilgerbosdrift bred Fantastic Mr Fox got the ball rolling when he ran out a game winner of the Gr3 Tony Ruffel Stakes. It was a second feature race winner for the son of Right Approach and Fort Wood matron, Fort Fox.

Two races later, and another Fort Wood mare, Wild Almond, was in the headlines. She is the dam of Strike Smartly gelding General Sherman – winner of Saturday’s Listed Wolf Power Handicap. General Sherman, bred by Nigel Page, was landing his first stakes victory.

Sunday saw Roman Wall pick up the non-black type feature race, the umThombothi Stakes at Greyville. The stakes placed son of Count Dubois is out of Fort Wood mare, Chica. Bred by Gavin Schafer, Roman Wall has now won four times.

Fort Wood, champion sire in South Africa previously, is now the broodmare sire of 28 stakes winners.

Other stakes winners produced by Fort Wood include this season’s outstanding 3yo Capetown Noir, winner of both the Gr1 Investec Cape Derby and Gr1 Cape Premier Yearling Sales Guineas.

He is currently clear on the South African broodmare sires list foe 2012/2013. This season alone, Fort Wood is the broodmare sire of horses who have won 79 races and over R6.7 million in prize money.
