Klawervlei’s red hot sire Captain Al was back in the news this Sunday, when his progeny dominated the two feature races run at Durbanville.
His son Captain America pushed his earnings to over R3.3 million when running out a gutsy winner of the G3 Matchem Stakes for trainer Brett Crawford and owners Adam Gurney, Delma Sherrell and Diane Nagle.
Making his first start since April, the ever game six-year-old ran on strongly to land Sunday’s R250 000 by just under half a length from Baritone, with Midnite Zone back in third place.
Now an eight time winner, whose previous victories included the G1 H F Oppenheimer Horse Chestnut Stakes, the Varsfontein Stud bred Captain America could be aimed at the G2 Green Point Stakes next before a tilt at the G1 L’Ormarins Queen’s Plate.
The big bay, who had also been runner up in both the G1 Grand Parade Cape Guineas and Investec Cape Derby of his year, also scored a massive win when he triumphed over subsequent G1 Mercury Sprint hero Red Ray in the 2013 Lanzerac Ready To Run Stakes.
While Captain America was lifting the third graded victory of his career, his paternal half sister Captain’s Flame landed her first G3 victory when successful in Sunday’s Diana Stakes.
The Andre Nel trained four-year-old, who had lifted two legs of last season’s Winter Series, showed her class in no uncertain terms when lifting the R250 000 Diana Stakes, leaving such high class fillies as Goodtime Gal, Come Fly With Me, Beach Goddess and Fillies Guineas winner Alexis in her wake.
Bred by the Cheveley Stud, Captain’s Flame (who is likely to be aimed at the G1 Maine Chance Farms Paddock Stakes and G1 Klawervlei Majorca Stakes) has now won five of seven starts –and she will not stop here!
Captain America and Captain’s Flame are both out of daughters of Fort Wood –who is also damsire of Captain Al’s talented graded stakes winners Eighth Wonder, Fragrant Al, and Wheredowego.
A former champion sire, and eight times leading sire of 2yos, Captain Al has three lots on offer at this week’s CTS Ready To Run Sale Presented by Lanzerac Hotel & Spa:
Lot 74 – this colt, a half brother to G3 filly Can Cope, is a full brother to the smart recent winner Captain Courteous.
