Great Britain son impresses in Umkhomazi

Southford Stud’s inform sire Great Britain, fresh off a mid-week double last week, looks to have a top-class son on his hands in the form of Al Mariachi.

Green Desert -sire of Great Britain

Bred by the Riverton Stud, Al Mariachi made it back to back feature race wins when he romped home to an impressive 2.75 length win in Sunday’s G3 Avontuur Umkhomazi Stakes over 1200m at Greyville.
The colt, who cost just R70 000 from last year’s KZN Yearling Sale, had previously won the KZN Yearling Sale Million and also ran third to unbeaten star Sand And Sea in the G1 Tsogo Sun Gold Medallion.

Al Mariachi, whose dam is by increasingly important broodmare sire Captain Al, has now won three of six outings and he won’t stop here!

He is one of six 2yo winners in 2016-2017 for Great Britain, whose other juveniles this season include G1 SA Nursery fourth place finisher Whorly Whorly.

An Al Quoz Sprint winning own brother to outstanding sire Cape Cross, Great Britain’s other notable performers this season include G3 Tommy Hotspur Handicap winner Wrecking Ball and Listed Swallow Stakes winner Hashtag Strat.

Great Britain’s close relative Iffraaj is the sire of three time G1 winner Ribchester, a leading contender for Wednesday’s G1 Qatar Sussex Stakes at Goodwood. Among Ribchester’s rivals for the G1 Sussex Stakes is Zonderland –who, like Great Britain, is a direct descendant of the important mare Balidaress.
