Guineas glory for Cape bred star
Saturday’s Gr2 Betting World Gauteng Guineas proved a triumph for Western Cape breeders. The first three horses home were all bred in the Cape – Louis The King (The Alchemy), Forest Indigo (Varsfontein) and As You Like (Moutonshoek).
Louis The King, a R55 000 buy at the 2012 KZN Yearling Sale, has proven a tremendous buy.
Not only has the colt already earned over R800 000 in prize money, but Louis The King also stands to earn a R2 million bonus, should he win the next two legs of the Triple Crown – the Gr1 SA Classic and the Gr1 SA Derby.
Bred by the Alchemy, Louis The King is one of 30 stakes winners sired by the Storm Cat horse Black Minnaloushe.
A top-class racehorse who won both the Irish 2000 Guineas and St James Palace Stakes, Black Minnaloushe is a half-brother to two other G1 winners – Pennekamp and Nasr El Arab.
At stud, Black Minnaloushe is come up with a string of top-class performers including G1 Breeders Cup Sprint winner Dancing In Silks, outstanding turf filly Black Mamba and the champion 2yo colts Jokers Wild, Hollinger and Kochka.
Standing at Maine Chance Farms, Black Minnaloushe is represented by 7 lots on the March Yearling Sale and a further 15 yearlings on the Emperors Palace National Yearling Sale.
Louis The King is the only foal produced by the now deceased mare Pamushana, who proved difficult to get in foal.
Unplaced on the racetrack, Pamushana is by Rich Man’s Gold, who is also the damsire of Gr1 Sansui Summer Cup winner Wagner, as well as current high-class 3yos Whistle Stop (Gr3 Graham Beck Stakes) and Athina (Gr3 Three Troika Stakes).
Pamushana is out of Milden Magic, who won six times up to 1200m, including the Gr3 Poinsettia Stakes.
The 2014 Betting World Gauteng Guineas winner is a direct descendant of one of history’s greatest mares, Pretty Polly.
Winner of 22 of 24 outings, Pretty Polly won the 1000 Guineas, Oaks, St Leger, Champion Stakes and Coronation Cup twice. Her descendants include numerous champions, and include the likes of Brigadier Gerard, Nearctic, Swain, Marwell, Golden Attraction, Eyeofthetiger, Roland’s Song, and Fantastic Light.
