Lot 137 is a colt by Maine Chance Farms’ promising first crop sire Lateral out of the Damascus Gate mare Gem Queen – making the chestnut a half-brother to top-class filly Hammie’s Hooker.
Hammie’s Hooker, a daughter of Trippi, has been one of the Cape’s top fillies for the best three seasons.
An outstanding 2yo, Hammie’s Hooker won five in a row as a juvenile. Her wins included the Gr3 Kenilworth Fillies Nursery, Perfect Promise Sprint and Irridescence Stakes.
At three, Hammie’s Hooker confirmed her status as one of the best of her generation. She was second to the unbeaten Rumya (beating champion All Is Secret) in the Gr1 Avontuur Estate Cape Fillies Guineas, before finishing third to the brilliant, and now exported, Blueridge Mountain in the Gr1 Klawervlei Majorca Stakes.
She made a winning debut at four, when landing the Gr3 Diana Stakes in scintillating fashion, but was unfortunate to come across a true champion in the shape of Beach Beauty during the latest Cape Summer Season. Hammie’s Hooker ran fourth to Beach Beauty in the Gr1 Maine Chance Farms Paddock Stakes, before finishing second to her old nemesis in the Gr1 Klawervlei Majorca Stakes.
An extremely talented filly, Hammie’s Hooker has won or placed in 15 of her 18 outings, and has earned just a shade under R1 000 000.
Gem Queen, dam of the yearling in question and Hammie’s Hooker, is also the dam of the highly talented Jet Master filly Victoriana – who won three and was second in the Gr3 Champagne Stakes.
A daughter of Damascus Gate, Gem Queen is a winning half-sister to the dam of Shocking Pink (dam of Oaks placed filly Justamossa). This is the family of Gr1 SA Fillies Sprint winner, Susan’s Dream.
The colt on sale is a son of the Group One winning champion Lateral – a son of Rakeen’s half-brother Singspiel.
Lateral, whose first crop of juveniles have already been successful in South Africa, recently recorded a double when Hollywood Sunset won locally while another off his progeny, Emiglia scored in Germany.
He was an exceptional racehorse, who was a champion at both two and three. Lateral, who won six of ten outings, won five stakes races including the Group One Gran Criterium.
With a heritage and bloodlines like these, this unnamed chestnut colt is definitely a horse to pay close attention to.
