Drakenstein Stud’s resident sire Duke Of Marmalade has enjoyed a magnificent year in 2015. His tally of black type winners include four major European classic winners, and Duke Of Marmalade features prominently on many European Sires lists.
The champion son of Danehill was back in the news mid-week, when he had an eye catching juvenile winner at Salisbury on Wednesday.
Duke Of Marmalade colt Royal Reserve, who had finished fourth first time out, made no mistakes when scooting home to win by a length over Mootaherer (a Dubawi half brother to champion sprinter Muhaarar) over 1200m.
Royal Reserve, who is out of a mare by Hawk Wing, was dispatched the 9-4 favourite for a race which looks to be potentially useful. Trained by William Muir, the bay is clearly held in high regard and holds entries in both the G1 Racing Post Trophy and next year’s Investec Derby. The latter race was won by Duke Of Marmalade’s half brother Ruler Of The World back in 2013.
Interestingly, Duke Of Marmalade is the sire of four two-year-old colts entered for the Derby next year.
His French Oaks winning daughter Star Of Seville also rates among the leading contenders for Sunday’s G1 Prix de’l Opera Longines on Arc day.
