Sandown Stud’s successful sire Ashaawes enjoyed an international double on Thursday, with his sons Lisnoble and Sanshaawes scoring in South Africa and Dubai respectively.
The Erico Verdonese owned and trained Lisnoble picked up the third win of his career when holding off a late challenge from Street Flyer to win by nearly half a length over 1600m. Bred by Dr Craig, the gelding was duly rewarded for consistency, having finished second and third respectively in his previous two outings.
Ashaawes’ star son Sanshaawes continues to do his sire proud, and this uber gallant and consistent seven-year-old made it Dubai win number four when he landed the EGA Jebel Ali Trophy at Meydan on Thursday evening.
A bargain R30 000 buy at the 20112011 Cape Regional Summer Yearling Sale, the Oldlands Stud bred Sanshaawes has now banked 17 cheques from just 19 Dubai outings and is a truly great advert for the quality and durability of the Cape bred thoroughbred!
In landing the 2000m turf contest by a length and a quarter, the Sheikh Bin Khalifa Al Maktoum owned seven-year-old made it Dubai win number four (he also finished runner up in the G1 Maktoum Challenge back in 2014). He was also a close up third, to Equus Champion Capetown Noir, in the 2013 G1 Investec Cape Derby.
Ashaawes, whose other notable performers include feature race contenders Omaha Tribe and top sprinter Asstar, is a well established sire, whose other progeny include multiple Graded winner Priceless Jewel, the exported G3 Matchem Stakes winner Reim, Guineas winner Scented Ash, and R500 000 plus earner Way Clear.
