International stakes double for Drakenstein sires

Drakenstein Stud’s exciting sires Duke Of Marmalade and Philanthropist enjoyed a notable international double recently.
Duke Of Marmalade’s oh so gutsy son Big Orange joined the likes of Le Moss, Further Flight, and Double Trigger as consecutive winners of the race, when he won Thursday’s G2 Qatar Goodwood Cup for a second year in a row.

The gallant five-year-old (who was picking up his fourth group win overall) showed plenty of courage in making all the running to land prestigious Cup race by 1.25 lengths from former G2 Doncaster Cup hero Pallasator with former G1 winner Sheikhzayedroad back in third.

Big Orange has now won seven of 18 outings and amassed more £760 000 in stakes and looks unlikely to stop here.

Trainer Michael Bell was understandably over the moon with the win, saying, “He’s an enormous horse and while it’s a bit of a cliche he is getting better with age. We’re so lucky to have him. He loves fast ground, has a high cruising speed and a huge stride.

“Bill’s [Gredley, owner] not so keen on Melbourne, Tim [Gredley, owner] is keen and I’d be quite keen, but we need to see what weight he has. The Canadian International and the Hong Kong Vase are both options for him too.”

Fifth in the G1 Emirates Melbourne Cup, Big Orange may again take part in the “race which stops a nation”, for which the gelding is currently a 16-1 shot.

Just one day earlier, Duke Of Marmalade’s stable mate Philanthropist had yet another 2016 stakes win when his daughter Generous Touch landed the Eternal Search Stakes at Woodbine. In landing Wednesday’s 1700m feature, Generous Touch was making it stakes victory number two having previously prevailed in the Passing Mood Stakes.

Her sire Philanthropist has been in sensational form of late, with Generous Touch’s latest win having been preceded by another Philanthropist daughter (Dancing On Fire) having landed Tuesday’s Rainbow Connection.

The red hot young sire is not only South Africa’s second leading First Crop Sire (by stakes) but Philanthropist is also currently North America’s second Leading sire on Synthetics.
