Drakenstein Stud’s exciting sire Duke Of Marmalade was represented by his fourth individual G1 winner when daughter Sound Of Freedom lifted the spoils in Sunday’s G1 Premio Lydia Tesio.
Winner of last season’s G3 Premio Regina Elena (Italian 1000 Guineas), Sound Of Freedom was always handy in Sunday’s Group1 contest, and went on approaching the final furlong to score a one and a quarter length victory under jockey Fabio Branca.
Runner up Zghorta Dance had earlier won the G3 Prix Vanteaux, while third place finisher Laganore made history when becoming Fastnet Rock’s 100th stakes winner when she was victorious in the Listed Dubai Business Internships Pride Stakes at Newmarket.
Now a five time winner and former Derby Italiano runner up, Sound Of Freedom, who was runner up in the Lydia Tesio last year, has now banked over £336 000 in prize money.
Her sire Duke Of Marmalade has enjoyed another tremendous season –and his four time group winning son Big Orange currently ranks among the leading contenders for November’s G1 Emirates Melbourne Cup.
Other notable winners for the champion son of Danehill this season include high class Australian filly Diamond Made, G2 Park Hill Stakes heroine Simple Verse (who has now earned nearly £1 000 000 in prize money), and US G1 performer Can’thelpbelieving.
To date, Duke Of Marmalade has over 50 stakes horses to his credit, highlighted by the classic winners Simple Verse, Star Of Seville, Nutan and Sound Of Freedom.
A half brother to former G1 Investec Derby hero Ruler Of The World, Duke Of Marmalade will be represented by his first South African yearlings in 2017.
