Jallad’s star’s first yearlings
The Gary Player Stud Farm is home to the well performed Russian Sage. The best performed son of champion sire Jallad at stud in South Africa, Russian Sage’s first crop are now yearlings.
He has some cracking youngsters in his first crop – including this colt of the mare Lemonzest. This mare is a winning half-sister to former champion Ziplock.
Russian Sage was an outstanding racehorse, who earned over R1.5 million in prize money. He won or placed in no fewer of 16 of his 20 local outings, and was also second in the Gr2 Dubai feature (now a G1 contest), the Jebel Hatta.
Russian Sage scored Gr1 victories in both the Investec Cape Derby and Daily News 2000, and also ran second in the Gr1 Bloodstock SA Cape Guineas of his year.
Among the numerous top-class horses defeated by Russian Sage were the Grade One winners Buy And Sell, Hunting Tower, Strategic News and Wendywood.
The Blushing Groom descendant Russian Sage is a son of former Champion Sire Jallad.
An exceptional stallion, Jallad (also the damsire of international sprint sensation Shea Shea) left behind over 60 stakes winners.
His 16 Gr1 winners included Horse Of The Year Free My Heart, champion Rabiya, and other stars as such Zebra Crossing (J&B Met), Scarena (SA Fillies Sprint), Major Bluff (Gold Cup), Grand Jete (Cape Derby) and Premier’s Champion Stakes winners The Hangman and Talahatchie.
Russian Sage (who is a great out-cross for Northern Dancer and Mr Prospector line mares) is from a strong female line.
His five time winning dam is a daughter of champion sire, and top broodmare sire Badger Land. Sage Blue is also responsible for disqualified Gr2 Gold Circle Derby “winner” Sage Throne, and is also a half-sister to former Gr1 SA Derby winner Silver Sliver.
Russian Sage’s second dam is an own sister to champions Grey Sun and Cerulean Blue.
A classic winner with a classic pedigree, Russian Sage is an exciting addition to the local stallion band. His first crop will be closely watched!
