Karakontie, who is very closely related to Varsfontein’s resident stallion Judpot, picked up his second major victory in 2014 when victorious in Saturday’s Grade 1 Breeders Cup Mile at Santa Anita Park.

Winner of the Group 1 French 2000 Guineas earlier in the season, the outstanding Bernstein colt, now a three time Group/Grade 1 winner, pushed his earnings to over €1.4 million following Saturday’s victory.

Karakontie, whose dam Sun Is Up is a grandson of Miesque – dam of Judpot, became the first Japanese bred horse to win a Breeders Cup race.

This red hot family is also responsible for 2014 Group 1 Yorkshire Oaks heroine Tapestry, as well as John F Kennedy – a leading hopeful for the 2015 Investec Derby.
Judpot, a former Equus Outstanding Stallion, has got some top class 3yos to his credit this season including Gr3 Lanzerac Diana Stakes winner Double Whammy (a top contender in Saturday’s Gr2 Choice Carriers Fillies Championship), and Dreamuponadream – who ran a close second in Saturday’s R3.85 million Emperors Palace Ready To Run Cup.

A son of A P Indy, Judpot has a 2014 stud fee of R45 000.
