Outstanding sire Var has made a superb start with his first two-year-olds this season –with the son of Forest Wildcat notching up a pair of impressive juvenile debut winners this past Saturday.
First of the Var babies to score was Hamunaptra, who won the Ascot Stud/Wicklow Stud Maiden Juvenile Plate over 800m by three parts of a length on debut.
The daughter of Var, who was bred by Haras Del Carmo, was a R180 000 purchase from this year’s KZN Yearling Sale.
Hamunaptra is a well related filly, being out of the Winter Oaks winner U Aintseenothinyet –herself a half sister to G2 Gold Bowl hero Eurovision.
Second Var juvenile to salute on Saturday was the handsome Var Ahead, a R400 000 buy from this year’s National Sale.
Backed down to start a 9-10 favourite, Var Ahead was simply too fast for his rivals and ran out a three and a half length winner of a maiden juvenile plate over 800m at Kenilworth on Saturday.
It was an impressive winning debut for the Justin Snaith trained colt, who is likely to be aimed at the Listed Summer Juvenile Stakes on J&B Met day next month.
His sire Var has an outstanding record as a sire of juveniles, with his previous graded stakes winning juveniles including the likes of Villandry (G1 Gold Medallion), Vacherin (G2 SA Nursery), Variety Club (G3 Langerman), Harry Lime (G2 Umkhomazi Stakes), Normanz (G3 Godolphin Barb Stakes), Valdivia (G3 Strelitiza Stakes) and Twitter (G3 Godolphin Barb Stakes).
Var is strongly represented at next month’s Cape Premier Yearling Sale –with the sire’s 23 strong draft including a filly out of top speedster Mocha Java (Lot 30), a daughter of Captain Al’s G1 daughter Possible Dream (Lot56), a stunning colt whose dam is a Street Cry mare from the great Best In Show family (Lot 98), a colt out of US G1 winner Gypsy’s Warning’s G2 winning half sister Surabi (Lot 103), a filly out of a stakes placed sister to champion Mother Russia (Lot 155), and a half brother to ill-fated G1 SA Classic hero Divine Jury and young sire Divine Jet (Lot 193).
Var also two beautifully bred yearlings on offer at February’s Val De Vie Yearling Sale – a full brother to classy filly Garibondy (Lot 4), and a half brother to G1 performers War Horse and Supreme Cup hero Deputy Jud (Lot 9).
