Main Aim off the mark in style!

Southford Stud’s resident sire Main Aim got off the mark in smashing style on Sunday when his daughter Golden Mystery won the Listed Breeders Fillies Mile at Borrowdale.
An uber consistent sort, the 2yo Golden Mystery (who was picking up her first career win) was given a superb ride from Andew Fortune to land the 1600m contest by half a length.

Bred by Ormond Ferraris, Golden Mystery (who was one of two runners in the race for Main Aim) has now won or placed in five of her six outings and she should not stop here.

To date, nine of Main Aim’s first crop have either won or finished in the money.

Himself a top class sprinter-miler, Main Aim won six races, including the G3 John Of Gaunt Stakes twice and he earned more than £270 000 in prize money. The talented galloper also put up a number of cracking efforts in defeat- most notably when second, to Fleeting Spirit, in the 2009 G1 July Cup, where Main Aim had no fewer than eight Group 1 winners behind him.

(Among those beaten by Main Aim in the July Cup were not only SA legend J J The Jet Plane, but hot young sire Paco Boy, and African Rose –whose unbeaten daughter Fair Eva is currently among the leading fancies for the 2017 classics).

A son of champion sprinter and outstanding sire Oasis Dream (his son Querari is responsible for Sunday’s G1 winning 2yo Querari Falcon), Main Aim is from an outstanding family.

His dam Orford Ness won the G3 Prix Sandringham and is not only dam of Main Aim but also G2 Prix Dollar hero Weightless and the stakes winner Home Affairs, who was beaten under two lengths in the G1 Prix Jean Prat.

Main Aim, who is from the same family as sire legends Mr Prospector, Seattle Slew and Tourbillon, is well represented at the upcoming National Two Year Old Sale. The sire’s four lots include:

Lot 62 – this filly is out of a daughter of G2 performer Ice Lily –an eight time winner who finished  third in the G2 Ipi Tombe Challenge and this is also the family of G2 winner Copper Tan and former G1 SA Guineas hero State Control

Lot 66 – a half brother to a very useful winner, this colt is out of a winning daughter of G1 winning 2yo Girl On A Swing- whose half sister won the G1 Golden Slipper

Lot 172 – a half brother to 2 winners, this colt is out of a winning half sister to 3 other winners and his third dam is champion Evening Mist, who won the G1 Champion Stakes, and who was produced by G1 SA Oaks winner Sea Mist

Lot 192 – out of a very quick, stakes placed winner of six, this filly’s second dam is a winning own sister to G2 winning 2yo Your Eminence and a half sister to 16 time G2 winner Bound By Honour, who finished third in the G1 July, and who tasted success in both South Africa and Germany
