Marchfield Son Nominated For Triple Crown
Moutonshoek’s young stallion Marchfield is the sire of Triple Crown nomination Bear At Last.
Trained by Reade Baker, Bear At Last is one 429 sophomores nominated for the Triple Crown (Kentucky Derby, Preakness Stakes, Belmont Stakes), to be run in North America in May and June.
The three race series, last won by Affirmed in 1978, will be run for a total value of $5 million in 2015.
Bear At Last was a well above average juvenile, who ran third in the Kingarvie Stakes at Woodbine.
His sire Marchfield made a cracking start with his first runners in 2014 and ended the year as the second leading first crop sire in Canada.
Marchfield’s sire A P Indy has more than made his mark on the US Triple Crown.
The winner of the Belmont Stakes in 1992, A P Indy is the sire of Bernardini and Rags To Riches, the respective winners of the Preakness Stakes and Belmont Stakes, while he is also the broodmare sire of former Kentucky Derby hero Super Saver.
A P Indy is also the male line ancestor of recent US classic winners California Chrome (Kentucky Derby, Preakness), Tonalist (Belmont Stakes) and Orb (Kentucky Derby).
