Medallion hatrick for Riverton

Medallion hatrick for Riverton
Saturday’s feature races, in both KZN and Gauteng, saw horses bred by the Riverton Stud well and truly come to the fore.
Not only did the Riverton bred Captain Of All win the Gr1 Tsogo Medallion, but another 2yo bred at the stud, Masked Lady, ran a cracking third in the fillies race, the Gr1 Allan Robertson Championship.

To complete the day, the smart Captain Al filly, Secret Obsession, scored her first feature race win when she won the Listed Syringa Handicap. As a half-sister to former Gr2 Golden Slipper winner Princess Sassi, Secret Obsession is clearly a very valuable future broodmare prospect. Her dam, Sweet Natasha, is currently in foal to the well bred young stallion, Great Brittain.

The truly impressive fact about these results is not only do Riverton send just 12-15 yearlings to the sales a year, but it was a third time a horse born and raised at Riverton was winning the Gold Medallion for trainer Dennis Drier!

Last year, the Riverton bred Potent Power (now plying his trade in Hong Kong) won for Drier, while in 2010, the Riverton born and raised Link Man (for the Tawny Syndicate), again took top honours for the Drier/Riverton Stud combination.

Masked Lady’s trainer, Glen Kotzen, holds the Casey Tibbs filly in high-regard, and he purchased her dam, Kamille, from the Barrys. Kamille is in foal to former sprint star Blue Tiger, who attracted plenty of positive comment at the recent Highlands Stallion Day.

Captain of All, who looks a leading contender for Equus Award honours, was particularly impressive, as he had broken his maiden just six days earlier, and is clearly as tough as he is talented. His dam, the Fard mare Serious Side, is also the dam of the useful filly Intimateconnection, and is now in foal to the Riverton Stud resident stallion Blue Tiger.

Potent Power’s dam, Solar Galleon, not only has a Blue Tiger filly (described by Natasha Barry as a smashing filly) but she is back in foal to Potent Power’s sire, the now deceased National Emblem.

The third Riverton based mare to have produced a Medallion winner, Western Smoke, is currently in foal to Right Approach.

This is superb achievement, and Riverton Stud, and all concerned, must be congratulated on this Gr1 hatrick.
