Last season’s champion sire Captain Al’s runners have been enjoying a purple patch of form of late, and the former Gr1 Cape Guineas winner was at it again on Kenilworth on Tuesday.
Of the seven races carded, Captain Al supplied the winners of three of them.
His Gr3 Magnum Cape Classic winning son Eighth Wonder kicked off the treble when he scored in race two, a graduation plate over 1600m.
The second race was a good one for Eighth Wonder’s sire, with Captain Al also responsible for third placed finisher Search Party.
Bred by Moutonshoek, Eighth Wonder was a R500 000 purchase from the 2014 Emperors Palace National Yearling Sale.
Captain Al progeny gave their sire a quick double when Varsfontein bred and owned Persian Silk romped home to break her maiden by in the third race of the afternoon.
The 3yo filly, a half sister to Gr1 Golden Horseshoe winner Forest Indigo, simply sauntered home to win by four lengths over 1200m. Persian Silk is bred on the increasingly successful Captain Al/Fort Wood cross, responsible for, among others, Gr1 H F Oppenheimer Horse Chestnut Stakes winner Captain America.
Third of the Captain Al winners to salute on Tuesday was Sails Set, one of three winners on the card for trainer Brett Crawford. The 3yo filly ran on smartly over 1000m to register the third win of her career and this Klawervlei Stud bred filly looks unlikely to stop winning here.
Champion Sire in 2014-2015, Captain Al has headed the SA 2YO Sires List for the past seven years in a row –and is once again enjoying another top season with his juveniles –with four of his first 6 2yo runners winning on debut.
The son of Al Mufti has a single lot on offer at Sunday’s Val De Vie Yearling Sale – a full sister to stakes winning 2yo Princess Alberta and a half sister to G2 winning speedster Badger’s Cove. Bred on the potent Captain Al/Badger Land cross which has produced champion Captain’s Lover and G1 SA Oaks star Pine Princess.
