More success for Highlands’ star producer

Highlands Farm is home to the hugely successful broodmare Moonlit Prairie. The daughter of G1 Breeders Cup Mile winner and champion US sire Cozzene has been a real moneyspinner with her foals excelling both on the track and in the sales ring.

A winner over a mile during her brief racing career, Moonlit Prairie is the dam of eighth foals to date. These eight include six individual winners and three black type winners –including triple G1 winner and popular young stallion Jackson.

Moonlit Prairie’s latest win came in the form of Magical Moon, a son of Trippi who won his first race over 1400m at Turffontein on Tuesday night. Bred by Highlands, Magical Moon was a R600 000 buy from the 2014 Cape Premier Yearling Sale.

His stakes winning half siblings are Jackson (G1 Investec Cape Derby, G1 Daily News 2000, G1 Champions Cup), Jade Bay (G3 Lebelo Sprint) and Heartland (G3 Byerley Turk) with the latter having recently finished second in the G3 Kuda Matchem Stakes and who looks an exciting prospect for the Cape Summer Season ahead.

Not surprisingly, Moonlit Prairie has proven popular in the sales ring. Jackson topped the 2010 Emperors Palace National Yearling Sale, where he fetched R1 million, while Jackson’s full brother Soft Eclipse made R2.2 million at the 2013 Emperors Palace National Yearling Sale.

The success of Moonlit Prairie, however, comes as no surprise, as she is a beautifully bred mare.

Not only was her sire Cozzene a Breeders Cup winning champion sire, he has also been a top class broodmare sire. The son of Caro is the damsire of more than 80 black type winners, including outstanding sire Pivotal, champion Distant Way, G1 winning sprinter Tangerine Trees and the outstanding US 2YO Toccet.

Her third dam is none other than Canada Racing Hall Of Fame inductee No Class, one of the greatest broodmares of the century. A stakes placed daughter of Nodouble, No Class is the dam of five G1 winners/champions and is also the second dam of hugely influential dual US champion sire Smart Strike, as well as ill-fated but successful SA sire Strike Smartly.

Moonlit Prairie has an Oratorio yearling colt this season and is currently due to leading sire Dynasty –the sire of Jackson and Heartland.
