More UK success for Cape bred thoroughbreds

Avontuur bred Cold As Ice recently picked up her first UK win when landing the Bet totetrifecta conditions stakes at Chelmsford City on December.

The brilliant daughter of Western Winter (fourth on her UK debut as the even money favourite) had previously won five of her seven outings in South Africa, including the G2 Choice Carriers Fillies Championship, G2 Sceptre Stakes and Listed Laisserfaire Stakes. Cold As Ice, who is out of the brilliant National Assembly mare Viva, had also finished second to Inara in the 2015 G1 Klawervlei Majorca Stakes.

Owned by Mrs Finch and Kieswetter, Cold As Ice (who provided jockey Bernard Fayd’Herbe with a first win in Britain) was an R875 000 buy from the 2013 Cape Premier Yearling Sale (Book 1).

Her future plans include the All Weather Championship Final at Lingfield Park on Good Friday but is likely to have one more run before.

Remarkably, Cold As Ice’s victory was quickly followed by a fellow Cape bred thoroughbred scoring at Southwell. This time it was the Klawervlei Stud bred Captain Lars who made it two wins on the bounce when scoring by seven lengths on Saturday.
Remarkably, the tough as teak gelding had won previously just two days earlier when successful at Lingfield.

A son of reigning champion sire Captain Al and high class Polar Falcon mare Polar Charge (2nd Oaks D’Italia), Captain Lars, now a seven time winner, won five times including the Listed Drum Star Handicap in South Africa.
