Varsfontein Stud will offer 13 yearlings (and one as agent) at Thursday’s Cape Yearling Sale, due to get underway at Mistico Equestrian Centre at 13:00 pm.
The draft includes lots by prominent and popular young sires Gimmethegreenlight, Judpot, Master Of My Fate, Sail From Seattle and Var to name a few.

Also sire of impressive feature race winners Exquisite Touch and Rivarine, Var is the sire of lot 75 –a colt by the name of Vardo. He is out of Captain Al’s multiple stakes winning daughter Victorian Secret, who herself is a full-sister to impressive recent 2yo winner Snowdance and a three-parts sister to G1 winners All Is Secret and The Secret Is Out. This magnificent family is also responsible for champions Bela-Bela and Rabiya, as well as 2000 Guineas victor Mystiko.
The farm’s red hot sire Gimmethegreenlight, Leading First Crop Sire of 2015-2016, has been enjoying success all over South Africa, with his 3yos Gimme The Stars and Beataboutthebush both landing feature races on successive Fridays.
The son of More Than Ready, also sire of such promising juvenile winners this season as Green Top, Green Plains, Rose In Bloom as well as the stakes placed La Bella Mia, is responsible for lot 33 – a half-sister to 2 winners, whose winning Western Winter dam is an own-sister to G3 winner Nevvay and half-sister to champion 2yo Laverna.
Gimmethegreenlight, who shares his broodmare sire Canny Lad with Australian champion sire Redoute’s Choice, is also sire of lot 50 –a half-sister to 2 winners, this filly is out of a half-sister to stakes winning fillies Cruise Collection and Dacha, as well as to Listed Spook Express Handicap runner up Requista –dam of G3 winning filly Aquitaine and G1 winner of over R3.7 million, Captain America.
The above mentioned G2 Gold Bracelet winner Cruise Collection is dam of Gimmethegreenlight’s son Sulka (Lot 113), while the versatile G1 winning Gimmethegreenlight (whose first crop included the G1 winning Equus nominee Gunner) is also sire of High Key (Lot 141) –a colt out of Royal Academy’s stakes placed daughter Ki Magee, a close relative of champion Desejado Thunder.
Last of the Gimmethegreenlights in the Varsfontein draft (as agent) is lot 107, a colt named Youonlyliveonce, whose winning dam is a half-sister to SA Derby winner Kale, and this is also the family of current G1 winner Carry On Alice and Equus Champion Kildonan.
Varsfontein’s G2 Premier Trophy winning sire Master Of My Fate (a son of two champions) is represented by his first yearlings in 2017. His lots include lot 3, a bay colt named One Destiny. The latter is a half-brother to 7 winners, including stakes winner of six Admiral’s Daughter, and his dam is a half-sister to international G1 winning sisters Irridescence and Perfect Promise (with the latter’s offspring including promising Australian 3yo Hard Promise).
Jet Master’s son is also responsible for a filly (Lot 40) named Petipa, whose relatives include former successful Varsfontein sire Caesour, as well as international champions Ajdal, Arazi and Noverre-and ill-fated US sire success Exchange Rate.
