Queen’s Plate hero links to top Australian sires
Varsfontein Stud’s popular young stallion, Gimmethegreenlight, has certainly got a lot going for him as a stallion.
Like former Champion Sire Jet Master, Gimmethegreenlight won South Africa’s premier one mile event – the Gr1 L’Ormarins Queen’s Plate.
A magnificent looking horse, Gimmethegreenlight was a brilliant juvenile, who won his four outings at two – including the Listed Somerset 1200.
He is a son of world leading sire More Than Ready – the sire of 120 stakes winners. More Than Ready, to date, has wrapped up leading juvenile sires title in both Australia (twice) and North America (once).
More Than Ready’s impressive tally of stakes winners includes two Golden Slipper winners (Phelan’s Ready, Sebring), three Breeders Cup winners (Pluck, More Than Real, Regally Ready) and impressive Haskill Invitational winner, Verrazano.
A half-brother to Grade One winner Ofcourseican, Gimmethegreenlight also has strong pedigree ties to two of Australasia’s most talked about stallions.
His dam, Yes She Can Cancan, is a daughter of Golden Slipper winner and successful sire Canny Lad.
An increasingly important broodmare sire, Canny Lad is the broodmare sire of Champion Sire Redoute’s Choice, and the extremely exciting young stallion, I Am Invincible.
Redoute’s Choice (Danehill), who is out of the outstanding Canny Lad mare Shantha’s Choice, has been one of the best sires to stand in Australia over the past fifty years. Twice Champion Sire, Redoute’s Choice has sired over 100 stakes winners – of which 23 are Group One winners.
I Am Invincible, whose dam is the Canny Lad mare Cannarelle, is a son of leading Irish sire Invincible Spirit. The young sire has made a sensational start with his first 2yos in Australia this season. His first 14 starters have produced 10 horses to finish in the money – including the impressive Gr3 winner Vinnie Eagle.
Gimmethegreenlight, who stood his first season for a fee of R20 000, will have his first yearlings next season.
