SA mare has smart Irish winner
Former top-class South African racemare Kournikova (Sportsworld) is the dam of a horse who recently pulled off a hatrick of wins in Ireland.
Pearl of Africa, a 3yo daughter of Jeremy, made it three wins on the bounce when she scored at the Curragh on Saturday.
Competing on the Irish Oaks undercard, Pearl of Africa won a handicap over 1600m to take her record to three wins from outings in 2013.
Bred by the Airlie Stud, Pearl of Africa is out of a mare who has a 100% strike record of winners to runners.
To date, all four of Kournikova’s registered foals have won – and she has already produced one stakes winner in the form of Slight Advantage (Peintre Celebre). All four of Kournikova’s winners are by different stallions.
A top-class filly, Kournikova (a half-sister to the dam of Algoa Cup hero Forest of Dean) has a filly foal by 2000 Guineas winner Makfi.
A five time winner, Kournikova won her biggest race when she landed the 2002 Gr1 Triple Tiara 1600 – where she defeated no less a star than Ipi Tombe.
Retired to stud, Kournikova won five times up to 2000m, and earned over R500 000.
