Silvano Champion Sire for 2012-2013

Silvano Champion Sire for 2012-2013
The racing season, which ended yesterday, belonged to Maine Chance Farms’ outstanding sire Silvano, who is officially South Africa’s champion sire for the 2012-2013 season.

It was a first general sires title for Silvano, who had been second in 2011-2012, and third the previous year.
Few sires have ever enjoyed a more dominant season than Silvano did this past season. His offspring earned a staggering R20 946 892 – a new seasonal record for a sire.

Silvano was over R5 000 000 clear of runner up Jet Master, who was knocked off the number one spot on the log after six years on top. Var, whose offspring earned over R12 485 000, and Captain Al were third and fourth on the general log. KZN’s best sire, Kahal, was the country’s top sire by money earned for the season – his runners earning over R12 298 000.

Silvano was represented by no fewer than 12 local black type winners during the season.
Amongst them were five Grade One winners, who dominated the country’s major races.

Geldings by Silvano won three of South Africa’s richest races – the J&B Met (Martial Eagle), President’s Champion Challenge (Heavy Metal), and Vodacom Durban July (Heavy Metal).

Remarkably, Silvano’s stakes winners included feature race winners from 1200m (Sedge, Happy Valentine) to 3600m (Crown of Gold).

He enjoyed particular success with his 3yos however, and was represented by the following outstanding sophomores:
Do You Remember (Gr1 Woolavington Stakes)
Gifted for Glory (Gr3 Winter Derby)
Silvano’s Jet (Gr2 Betting World Derby)
Tellina (Gr2 Gauteng Guineas)
Vercingetorix (Gr1 Daily News 2000)

Not only did two of the sire’s offspring win two Gr1 races on one day (Do you Remember, Vercingetorix), but Silvano also sired the first two in the Gr2  Betting World Derby, when his sons Silvano’s Jet and Hot Ticket fought out the finish.

Silvano also sired Gothic and Do You Remember, second in the Gr1 SA Derby and Gr2 SA Oaks respectively.

Well done to connections of this world-class stallion, who had a truly unforgettable season!
