Six for Var on Tsogo Sun Sprint day

Avontuur’s outstanding sire Var has built up a tremendous reputation as a sire of top sprinters.

This can be seen in the recent results on Scottsville’s big sprint race day, set to take place once again this Saturday.

Var has sired the winners of three of the four races previously – Villandry (G1 Gold Medallion), Val De Ra and Via Africa (SA Fillies Sprint), and Contador and Normanz (G1 Golden Horse Casino Sprint).

The only Scottsville G1 sprint which has not been won by a Var sired horse is the G1 Allan Robertson Fillies Championship.
However, Var’s daughters Valdivia, Valeta and Sea Cat were all placed in the Allan Robertson, and it is surely only a matter of time before a Var filly wins this prestigious championship.

Var holds a strong hand, once again, in the sprint championships this year. He has no fewer than six runners in the G1 sprint features – Vampirella (Allan Robertson Championship), Isca (Tsogo Sun Gold Medallion), Garibondy and Varikate (City Of Pietermaritzburg Fillies Sprint), and Generalissimo and Normanz (G1 Tsogo Sun Sprint).

Remarkably, Var sons have won the G1 Tsogo Sun Sprint for the past two years in a row – with Contador winning in 2013 and Normanz the following year.

South Africa’s premier source of speed, Var, whose great son Variety Club is set to stand his first season at stud this year, is enjoying once again a superb season in 2014-2015 and currently ranks as South Africa’s second leading sire of 2yos, by stakes.
